Mexicans are passionate about football!
We had the privilege today of joining the YWAM Soccer Club, which they run weekly with children in the neighbourhood surrounding the YWAM base. Several staff have a real heart for the kids and want to give them some fun and attention, and teach them values through soccer. We we’re excited to join in, as we had hauled a suitcase packed full of 25 soccer balls all the way from NZ as gifts from some generous Kiwi kids.
So we headed to their “field” which was a stony, dirt triangle shaped piece of ground, and, in 37 degree heat, we started doing “warm-ups!!” Crazy!!!
After a friendly tranz-pacific match, in which the NZders managed to hold up against the skilled Mexicans, the club leaders encouraged the kids to strive for good and most of all, to love God. Then came the cool part of presenting each child with the gift of a soccer ball of their own. One kid in particular, was open-mouthed in surprise and joy! Was so precious to see. We also gifted more soccer balls to the club, which was very timely as they were down to their last two, as they regularly get popped on the stones and thorns.
I don’t think that Jackson, Jacob, Poppy, George and Thomas had ever sweated so much playing sport before as you can tell from the photo, but all said their enjoyed themselves thoroughly!!
