We had quite the storm last night in Mazatlan, it was a spectacular show of thunder and lightning that woke most of us up in the night, but meant a muddy slippery build site today. It was decided that not all the team would go. Here is the lowdown from Haylee (17)
HOLA!!!
Six days – we’re practically Mexicans already!!! Haha! Today started out very very wet, the ‘once in a blue moon rainy day’ hit us full force. So after dragging ourselves out of bed far too early, we decided not to start the build straight away after all! So after a much needed coffee, Dad, Darren, Jo, Phil, Kathy, Jackson, Jacob, Cathan and I headed out to the build, while the rest stayed home, learned to make balloon animals and drunk smoothies! It was really humbling arriving at the build and starting to set up, because when Dad went to take the tent roof off a pile to put on the frame, he found Diego’s bed underneath – he had slept outside, underneath our tarp because he had nothing else to shelter him from the storm. Today was a lot of hard work, with our team of 22 cut to a team of 9 because it was too hard to get so many people on such a muddy site. We pulled through though, and got all the exterior cladding and a roof on, and most of the inside gibbed and stopped – even with starting late, and a van load of the team getting lost, and the truck of supplies getting stuck on a road somewhere – apparently they needed Jacob and Cathan’s Kiwi 4WD ‘expertise’ to get them unstuck! It’s absolutely incredible to see this whole project take shape, right next to their old house. The two beautiful Ladies in the first photo are Margarita and Vianey, both of them got really into helping today, even with having almost no english. Tomorrow we will finish this house, I am so thankful that next weeks house is for the same extended family, because I definitely don’t want to say goodbye to these guys just yet!
As for those who stayed home we enjoyed a balloon animal making session with Julie and then we walked down the road and had a smoothie it was huge and only $3! The kids enjoyed a swim in the afternoon and a bit of a chill out time watching old videos. The folks who went out to the building site had a long day and did not get back to the base until dinner time, but they achieved alot and were all a little tired. We at home are just hoping that tomorrow will be a fine day as we are just itching to get back, to see the progress, to see the family and give them this most awesome gift!.
Thanks you people at home, it’s so cool to be still encouraged by you when we are so far away, bring on tomorrow!
